The Legacy of Truk Lagoon With dramatic historical footage and stunning underwater cinematography, this video documents the history of World War II at Truk Lagoon.
Located in the western Pacific among the islands of Micronesia, Truk was a strategic naval base: Japan's "Gibraltar of the Pacific."
On February 17 and 18, 1944, the Americans attacked. The defenders fought bravely, but they were overwhelmed by the air barrage, code-named Operation Hailstone. Bombs and torpedoes destroyed more than 40 Japanese ships and 200 planes.
Interviewed 50 years after the shattering event, Trukese survivors, Japanese and American veterans share their stories.
Underwater cameras lead viewers on exciting explorations among the sunken ships, tanks and aircraft, now overgrown with vivid soft corals and exotic sea creatures.
The program climaxes with the search for one of Truk's long-lost shipwrecks. Share the excitement as the film crew finds the Katsuragisan Maru in 200 feet of water, and is the first to dive and film her grave at the bottom of the sea. |
